Washington, May 12, 2021 — Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA), a nonprofit organization working to improve the cybersecurity of the global digital ecosystem, today announced The Institute for Security and Technology (IST) as its newest Supporting Partner. As part of its mission to disrupt malicious cyber activity strategically and to raise the level of cybersecurity across the digital ecosystem, CTA collaborates with a broad range of nonprofit organizations who mutually support and promote each other’s mission. CTA recently collaborated with the IST on the Ransomware Task Force (RTF) resulting in the release of a comprehensive framework for action against this insidious threat.
“I am very excited to have IST as a CTA Supporting Partner. After working with Phil and the IST team on the Ransomware Task Force, it became clear that our organizations have multiple reinforcing interests. IST’s commitment to combining policy and technology to address large problems meshes well with CTA’s mission to improve the cybersecurity of our digital ecosystem,” said Michael Daniel, President and Chief Executive Officer of CTA. “Our organizations will continue to collaborate to tackle the problem of ransomware and the national security threat it poses. This on-going work makes a partnership a natural fit.”
“We are extremely pleased at the opportunity to become a Supporting Partner to the Cyber Threat Alliance,” said Philip Reiner, Chief Executive Officer of IST. “At the core of all we do, the overarching intent is to take action to address operational cybersecurity and other emergent security threats — collaborating with partners across the ecosystem. Working with Michael and the CTA team on the ransomware threat proved this is a natural partnership, and we are excited at the opportunity to expand upon the work we’ve been doing in the Ransomware Task Force together.”

About the Institute for Security and Technology
The Institute for Security and Technology (IST) builds solutions to enhance the security of the global commons. Our goal is to provide the tools and insights needed for companies and governments to outpace emerging global security threats. Our non-traditional approach has a bias towards action, as we build trust across domains, provide unprecedented access, and deliver and implement solutions. With a network of experts in Silicon Valley and influential policy makers in national capitals, we are the preeminent US West Coast institute positioned to outpace security risks and facilitate solutions before they become catastrophic to society. Our success is built on strong networks of trust that allow us to customize problem-solving approaches that bridge distinct communities and propel action, recently demonstrated by the success of the cross-sectoral, public-private Ransomware Task Force (RTF).Our areas of focus cover a broad portfolio: from ransomware and DDoS, to broader cybersecurity and information warfare, identifying and countering state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda, the impact of technology on democracy and human security, and the rise of digital authoritarianism and algorithmic warfare; to the role that machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies play in shaping national security policy and political environments. We create tangible solutions based on analysis and recommendations from our research, by bringing both the national security and technology community together to prototype, ideate, and spin out technical solutions with an eye towards digital hygiene and the vulnerabilities created by the integration of emerging technology and existing systems. None of this works without the extensive networks on which we rely and bring to the table – we exist to bring about collaboration between disparate communities. We convene the national security and technology communities in order to provide physical, virtual, and trustworthy spaces to come together to solve the world’s most difficult technical security challenges.
