CTA is honored to welcome Chelsea Conard to our team as our Cyber Threat Report Analyst leading our analytic reports program. Here we introduce Chelsea in her own words.
Can you give us a brief history of your studies and career so far?
My undergraduate studies in Economics, Computer Science, and Mandarin naturally steered me towards cybersecurity. I joined the intelligence community upon graduation, working for the Department of Homeland Security, and Lincoln Laboratory, and then joined Kudelski Security as a Cybersecurity Consultant. I have had the opportunity to work in cyber intelligence, network security, cloud security, and strategy, risk and compliance. I am currently a student in the Technology and Policy Program (TPP) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying cybersecurity policy. On campus, my research is on cyber risk quantification at the Internet Policy Research Initiative (IPRI) in the Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) at MIT and I am the Vice President of the Technology and Policy Student Society.
What drives your interest in pursuing cyber policy focus?
I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of cyber policy in how it naturally encourages a wide array of perspectives. I also love the challenge to bridge the gap between communicating technical concepts into high-level discussions. This field is so vast that we have the chance to build a common language and understanding where “What is the Internet?” can evoke different responses; an engineer may point to layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, and map how various technologies and protocols operate within each layer, while a user might define the Internet in terms of the experience of going online. Finally, with cyber as an evolving landscape, I love how this field has the humbling effect of bringing together novices and experts to see something for the first time and work together.
